Qualifications and Experience

I am a Professional Engineer based in Brisbane, Australia with a passion for teaching. Because of my varied
career experiences in telecommunications engineering, professional photography, mining services engineering,
computer programming, and computer maintenance and training, I find it easy to relate to most people.

With this background I can often provide students with real life examples to illustrate a particular area of study,
and help to make the subjects seem more relevant and interesting.

I hold a four year Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering, majoring in Electronics and Communications Theory,
from QUT, Brisbane. I am happy to supply a copy of my academic record for perusal at the first tutoring session.



Subjects Offered

I offer individual tutoring for High School students in Maths and Physics from Year 8 to Year 12, and also
provide assistance in most areas of Computer Studies. I also coach TAFE and University students, getting them up
to speed on Maths, Physics, Statistics and other introductory or pre-requisite subjects in the shortest possible time.

I also tutor some engineering subjects (mainly mathematics), or may be able to refer you to another suitable tutor if
the subject is not one which I offer. Please call to discuss your specific requirements.

Students in the social sciences regularly contact me for assistance in understanding Statistical Analysis, and in how to
use the SPSS package in particular. I can help you with improving your statistical knowledge, so that you know which
tests to apply and whether you have obtained a result which is statistically significant. I can also show you how to apply
this knowledge using the SPSS package. Most importantly, you should acquire this knowledge before designing your
experiment or survey, as there is generally little which can be done to resurrect useful information from data produced
by an inappropriately designed test procedure.

For other subjects (such as English, Chemistry, Biology, ESL, etc.) I can probably match you with a suitable tutor.

Location

Tutoring is normally done at the student's home, although more flexible arrangements can be made if required.

I cover suburbs which lie within approximately 20 minutes travel from Bardon in the inner Western Suburbs of Brisbane.
(A guide to the list of suburbs to which I usually travel is included below).

Students further away than this will be considered if there are two or more who can fit into adjacent session times.
Alternatively, students can travel to Bardon to receive tuition, or to a nearby public library. If in doubt, give me a call,
as I might have another student in your area on a waiting list.



Duration and Time

Tutoring sessions normally run for 1 hour. Longer sessions can be arranged for older students if required. Sessions of
less than one hour are not available.

The most popular time for school students is between 3.30pm and 6.00pm. Weekend and evening sessions are also
available, generally for older students.



Number of Sessions Required
There are no contracts to sign and no fixed number of sessions to commit to in advance. You may choose to start
with one trial lesson. However, it is recommended that regular weekly sessions at a fixed time provide the best way
of achieving a lasting performance improvement in a subject.

In order to generate repeat business, I rely solely on providing a top quality tutoring service which delivers a noticeable
improvement in your student's performance and comfort with the subject.

However, in order to make a moderately predictable  income, I give preference to students who wish to see me on a
weekly basis. Casual bookings are fitted in around these regular clients.



Working with Young People

If a student is under the age of 18, and tuition is to take place at home (either yours or mine), then it is preferred that
a parent or other responsible adult accompany the student.

As required by Queensland laws for people working with children, I am the holder of a current Blue Card. I will show
this card at the first tutoring session. You may ask to see it again at any subsequent time.

No other tutors are employed. I am the sole tutor. Therefore, once you have assessed my suitability as a tutor, you will
not have to go through the process again.

I believe the "secret" to successful tutoring is in changing the outlook of the student - from frustrated, confused and
pressured to confident, competent and enthusiastic. I employ a range of subtle techniques to achieve this change.

I provide a professional service - on time, every time. In the unlikely event that I can't make an appointment, I will call
at the earliest opportunity to make suitable alternative arrangements. (In return, I expect that clients will extend the same
courtesy to me).

My tutoring rates provide excellent value for money. There is usually an immediate improvement in a student's attitude,
application and interest in a subject. In time these changes will generally translate to improved results at school, and
a happier student.

I realise that I do not have the answer to every student's problems. If I determine that your student is not achieving
reasonable progress with my tuition, then I will discuss options with you, such as trying a different tutor or a different approach.

I am full of UBIs ("Useless" Bits of Information), little known gems which can help a student to establish a more confident
relationship with teachers and classmates alike.
